Vietnam Veterans Day 18th August

by John Elliott on August 19th, 2010

This day has become an important day for not only the Australian soldiers who fought in this war, but also all Australian’s to remember and reflect on the significance of the Long Tan battle in 1966.

On 18th August 1966 the Australian D Coy 6 RAR was engaged in a battle against the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong guerrillas in a rubber plantation at Long Tan, South Vietnam where enemy losses exceeded 2500 whilst Australian losses were 18.

This battle elevated the ANZAC forces status and reputation. It turned out to be a key point in history where Prime Minister Bob Hawke, in October 1987, declared the Long Tan Battle date of 18th August be set aside each year to be known as Vietnam Veterans Day.This day since 1987 has enable Australian soldiers, their families and friends as well as all Australians to remember the sacrifice  the 521 young Australian soldiers made in fighting for their country plus the 2500 wounded force members.
