It appears, according to today’s article by Patrick Bartley in the Age’s sport section (back page) that Picnic Races are not immune from betting plunges or stings usually witnessed at city race meetings.
Patricks story relates to an unnamed picnic race bookmaker who apparently overheard 3 weeks ago, two informed punters at a picnic race day discussing a particular horse that was or might be being set for a feature race at Balnarring in 2 weeks time. This bookie noticed the mentioned horse ran that day but finished last.
The story gets more interestingLeading up to the Balnarring Cup where this horse is in the field and this particular bookie decides not to operate as a bookie on the day but bring 5 friends into the loop by having them place bets on his behalf when bookies opened their field prices for that race.
Apparently each friend was given $600 each to place with 5 different bookies at around 9/1. However, when word quickly got around there was possibly a sting in process, they dropped their odds immediately.
The horse in question come home yielding the punter “for a day” a tidy return of $27,000 for an outlay of $3,000. Not a bad days work. The Age article is silent what sling the friendly 5 got or how long the bookie will be on vacation before returning to holding the bag at the next picnic race day.
