John Elliott’s Aussie Monday Congratulations

by John Elliott on September 26th, 2011

Despite the week being dominated by two Swans, Wayne on being awarded as Worlds Greatest Treasurer by Euromoney Magazine (Mark Knight’s cartoon yesterday on Swan summed up the public’s attitude) and Dane on winning the 2011 AFL Brownlow Medal last night, there was a good cross section of events that warranted inclusion on my congratulations list.

Sport- Congratulations to Port Melbourne on winning the 2011 VFL Flag giving Gary Ayres ( ex –Hawks premiership player) his first flag as a coach.

-Congratulations to Australia on winning the Sri Lanka Cricket Test series 1-nil and to Mike Hussey on being voted Player of the Series.

Congratulations to Collinwood and Geelong on their respective wins to compete for the 2011             Premiership Flag on Saturday.

Beer-    Congratulations to Bruce Siney, the successful CUB Marketing Director from the early 1970s to 1993 ,for explaining in plain English where Fosters went wrong over the last 20 years in managing their top beer brands in last Saturday’s Weekend Australian’s Business section. Unfortunately for SAB Miller, he now works as a
consultant to Coopers who will now be the largest Australian brewer with around 3.5.to 4 % market share, with Broo most likely taking second place.

Business –Congratulations to Kevin Roberts of retailer Colorado and NAB for initiating a debt to equity reconstruction under the name Fusion Retail brands to take the previous 282 Colorado Group stores out of Ferrier Hodgson’s receivership .The bad news is that private equity firm Affinity, who paid $450m for Colorado in 2006 got nothing back from this restructure. It’s pleasing to see there are still enterprising people out there prepared to convert a problem to an oppurtunity

Tasmania  – Congratulations to Tasmanian Distiller, Patrick Maguire on having his Sullivans Cove single malt whisky chose by Harrods of London to be on harrod’s “Whiskies of the World” show case. Patrick left last week for London to host a series of in-store tastings for Harrod’s shoppers and a private tasting for selected Harrod’s customers.Tasmania can now proudly add Single Malt Whisky to its UK export list ,a product Sir Henry Jones would have liked to add to his jam and apples exports.

Have a good week and I will be barracking for Geelong on Saturday.
