John Elliott’s Melbourne Fair Dinkum Aussie Pies

by John Elliott on May 26th, 2011

As my appetite and preference for a good old fashioned made Australian meat pie is well known, last week I tasted one the best meat pies I have had for a very long time. This splendid pie was made by Dinkum Pies, based in Melbourne’s CBD who last year won The Age 2010 Pie Award. I gave their meat pie a rating of 9 out of 10, the loss of 1 point was due to the tomato sauce sachet provided was not my favourite sauce, Rosella but an inferior brand.

Dinkum Pies is located at 29 Block Place, Melbourne (lane north of Block Arcade) and is open weekdays from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm, phone 9 654 6792. In addition to making a wide range of pies, they also make various pie/pastry party foods and cakes as well as catering for office lunches and functions.

The film crew’s recorded interview with Dinkum Pie’s head baker and pastry-cook, Luke Kelly and one of their regular satisfied hungry pie customers, can be viewed in the video below.

In all my years I have never eaten the perfect pie. However Rosella tomato sauce rescues even the most ordinary pie. Long live the bird.
