How Not to Launch a New Resources Tax: John & Tom Elliott Reveal Labors Mistakes

by John Elliott on May 25th, 2010

Kevin Rudds decision to use Labors Inner or Kitchen Cabinet , with input from Ken Henry, Head of Treasury, to approve the new resources tax concept and then take it to the Labor Caucus as a done deal, has blown right up in Rudd and Swans face. Not only did the Government not consult with their own Federal members but they didn’t consult with the large miners BHP, RIO prior to its release nor was Ross Garnaut, the creator of the petroleum rent tax and Chairman of Lihir Gold consulted prior to its initial approval and release into the public domain.

This has resulted in public slinging matches from both sides (in and outside of Parliament) with Martin Ferguson the only Labor Cabinet member now offering a genuine invitation to consult with the hostile miners. Too late they cried!

Listen to John and Tom outline where Labor went wrong and also what downside risks now face Labor leading up to the next election due to their amateurish and naïve tactics used to introduce this new tax and to try and sell their message to an united and hostile mining industry and voters alike.

    Great stuff Jack,

Blokes like you and Jack Thompson are the only genuine traditionally authentic old guards left who have the guts to front up on the national stage and reflect our once great Australian brand of unique culture.

some say its acronistic. I say bullshit Jack. Political correctness ensures it’s just hidden from view.
