Another Tasmanian First – Tassie Shiraz Wins Jimmy Watson Trophy

Sir Henry Jones would have been very proud to learn that 31 year old Southern Tasmanian winemaker Nick Glaetzer, produced the first Tasmanian  shiraz to win the prestigious wine industry award, The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the best young Australian red wine. While the Glaetzer wine – making family have been in the Barossa Valley since the 1880s, Nick moved to Tasmania 6 years ago to start his own vineyard in southern Tasmania trading under the name of Glaetzer-Dixon .

Diney Wiesener, the Australian born wife of my long term friend Richard Wiesener (ex McKinseys and Henry JonesIXL) has been living in the  Provencal region of South France for 30 years. Diney is an outstanding cook. Her friends, who own the Mirabeau Wine vineyards at Pourcieux near where she and Richard live, recently produced a series of video recordings on Dineys food cooking skills.

Chateau Tanunda Shiraz Wins Top World Wine Prize

As I rank good Australian Shiraz’s as world quality I was pleased to see that a 2005 Chateau Tanunda vintage shiraz was voted best shiraz at the recent International Wine and Spirit Competition where judges had wines from 80 countries to taste and assess.

Talking Wine

I purchased Henry Jones IXL in December 1972. Clearly the biggest asset we had was in South Africa where I had done a very detailed evaluation and Richard Wiesener and I spent the next several months in early 1973 looking to sell the business because we had purchased Henry Jones with a very highly geared situation, $6 million of equity and around $30 million of debt. We were keen to repay the debt by selling off the South African business.
