Moonee Valley Hosts Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nayhan’s Global Arabian Horse Festival Races

Under the kind patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nayhan’s Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival, two races for purebred Arabian horses were run last Friday at Moonee Valley. There was a big crowd there as Black Caviar was running in the Essendon Mazda Australia Stakes that night to score her 17th consecutive win.

Carlton Football Players Revisit Lygon Street Support Base

Yesterday Chris Judd and other Carlton players made a long overdue return to Lygon Street Carlton, much to the pleasure of a large number of Blues fans who turned to welcome their walk down this well known Carlton precinct which has long been associated with The Blues.

Oaks Day Special – Richard Cranium One To Watch

Spring Carnival Preview – Richard Cranium One To Watch

Our racing correspondent was at a NSW regional race track recently and was impressed with a young colt called Richard Cranium who put in a strong run at the finishing line. With the Spring Carnival not far away, this colt is definitely one to watch which you can do by watching the last 300 metres run home on the video below.

John Elliott & John Kennedy Snr At Old Carey’s 1961 Premiership Reunion

Last Saturday was a big day for the Old Carey 1961 E Grade Premiership players who attended a special pre-game luncheon at “Cookie’s Kitchen”. The John Elliott film crew were there and recorded various speeches and took photos of past players/officials who came along to celebrate this important event. Michael Cooke firstly introduced John Elliott, ruck rover in the 1961 side.

John Elliott & Old Carey’s 1961 E Grade Football Premiership Team

Given John’s busy media commitments on Fosters this week, he has asked yours truly, Percy, as the JDER Website Sports Editor to remind all the Old Carey supporters and viewers about the big 50th reunion on Saturday 25th June for the 1961 Panthers Premiership team. John that year won the clubs best and fairest as a robust ruck-rover and according to him, and others, he displayed his normal aggressive style on grand final day.

John Elliott’s Old Carey Football Club Preview

Tomorrow the confident Panthers, after a sound win against traditional rivals Old Xavierans the week before, meet University Blues at Parkville where a win will keep them in the four. According to Cookie, the team has been training well over the extended break and their new recruits have settled in well which should see the Panthers retaining their top four position by the seasons end.

John Elliott’s Old Carey VAFA Premier A  Football Wrap

Despite Old Carey suffering another close defeat ,this time to St Bedes Mentone by 4 points, they still remain in the four (fourth position ) but with  De La Salle 2 points away sitting fifth. Collegians remain on top with St Bedes second. The Panthers remain competitive as their last two losses have been by 8 and 4 points respectively, however their improved performances in the last 2 quarters haven’t been enough to get the 4 points.

John Elliott’s Old Carey VAFA Premier A Football Wrap

Old Carey’s three game winning streak came to an end last Saturday when the Collegians (Wesley) beat them by 11 goals. The Panthers had no answer to the Collegian’s S.Taft who booted 8 goals, nearly half their score. As a result, the Panthers drop to third place and Old Xav’s move into second spot after their 4 point win over De La Salle.

John Elliott Recalls Roger Bannister Breaking 4 Minute Mile Record

I was in form 2 at Old Carey Grammar when Roger Bannister (now Sir Roger) broke the 4 minute mile barrier at Oxford on this day, 6th May back in 1954. I can remember his record run was a major topic of conversation at school for weeks. This was then, and still is, regarded as a major human achievement and milestone where Bannister’s time of 3.59.4 minutes elevated him into the athletic superstar category.

Old Carey VAFA Premier Reserve Football Wrap

Old Carey made it three in a row on Saturday by beating last years B Grade runners up, Old Haileybury by 31 points. Despite a slow start the Panthers dominated the last 3 quarters with J Rowe and C Peterson each bagging 3 goals. Collegians is on top with the Panthers sitting second, the only teams to win three straight games.

Victoria Shaw Claims Girls Record Day At Balnarring’s Easter Races

Victoria Shaw, Australia’s only female race caller, claimed her Easter Saturday’s race call at Balnarring was an unofficial record for female horse racing where all six races were won by female riders, but where the race caller was also a female. Furthermore, two winners were trained by well known female trainers, Rebecca Waymouth and Karyn Brewster.
