Another Tasmanian First & Rare Specie-1923 Alfa Romeo RLS

by John Elliott on October 20th, 2011

This rare 1923 Alfa Romeo, now owned by the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) , Launceston in Tasmania  is one of only five in the world, but the only one retaining its original body work. Also, it was the first vehicle in Tasmania to reach 100 miles per hour (unofficially) back in 1924 as well as being the first Alfa Romeo to achieve a racing victory outside Europe. You can see the 1924 hillclimb action photo taken of the 1923 RLS in the photo gallery below.

This Alfa was purchased in 1924 by Tasmanian businessman Mr Gordon Fysh (cousin of aviation pioneer Sir Hudson Fysh, the founder of Qantas) and had another 5 owners before the Launceston Museum purchased the rare Alfa in 2001 to ensure it stayed in Tasmania. The cars ownership history and technical details are outlined in the attached articles.
